Pet exercise basics
Bored pets become destructive pets. Adequate exercise prevents 80% of common behavior problems.
How much exercise dogs need
Wide variation by breed and age:
- Toy breeds (Chihuahua, Maltese) — 30-45 min/day.
- Small-medium (Beagle, Cocker Spaniel) — 45-90 min/day.
- Sporting/working (Lab, Retriever, German Shepherd) — 1.5-2+ hours/day.
- High-energy (Border Collie, Husky, Vizsla) — 2+ hours, plus mental stimulation.
- Puppies — 5 minutes per month of age, twice a day (avoids joint damage).
- Seniors — frequent shorter walks; arthritis-friendly movement.
Types of dog exercise
- Walks — the daily baseline. Sniff time matters as much as distance.
- Off-leash play — fetch, frisbee, dog parks. Burns energy faster than walks.
- Swimming — easy on joints; great for high-energy or older dogs.
- Mental stimulation — puzzle toys, training sessions, scent work. 15 minutes of brain work = 30 minutes of physical exercise for tiredness.
- Group play — meet-ups with friend dogs. Some dogs love it; some hate it. Read your dog.
Cat exercise (yes, really)
Most indoor cats don't get enough activity. Effects: obesity, joint issues, behavior problems, depression. Aim for 2-3 sessions of 10-15 minutes daily.
- Wand toys — interactive play; mimics hunting.
- Laser pointers — fun but always end with catching a real object (otherwise frustrating).
- Cat trees and climbing — vertical space matters.
- Puzzle feeders — make them work for food.
- Window perches — bird-watching is mental enrichment.
- Catios — enclosed outdoor space; best of both worlds.
Weather adaptations
- Heat — exercise early morning or evening. Asphalt hot enough to burn pads above 85°F. Bring water.
- Cold — small/short-haired dogs need coats below ~40°F. Watch for ice salt on paws.
- Rain — many dogs hate rain. Indoor play, training, puzzle toys.
Signs of inadequate exercise
Destructive chewing, excessive barking, hyperactivity, weight gain, behavior issues, anxiety, depression. If you see these in an otherwise-healthy pet, more exercise + mental stimulation is the first thing to try.
