Downsizing your home

In Seniors · #seniors #downsizing #moving #decluttering

Downsizing isn't just about stuff. It's about saying goodbye to one chapter while moving into the next. Take it slow.

Start 6+ months before the move

The single most important rule. Rushed downsizing creates regret. If you have time, take it. Start with rooms you use least.

Room-by-room order

  1. Storage rooms / attic / basement — easiest to declutter; often haven't been opened in years.
  2. Guest rooms — fewer emotions attached.
  3. Office and paperwork — shred old documents (keep tax records 7 years; medical records indefinitely).
  4. Kitchen — duplicate utensils, gadgets you haven't used in 2 years.
  5. Living areas
  6. Bedroom and bathroom — usually last; most personal.
  7. Closets — clothing decisions are exhausting; save energy for these.

The four-pile method

For each item: Keep · Give · Sell · Donate. If you can't decide on a third item in a row, take a break.

What to keep

  • Things you use weekly.
  • Things with deep, irreplaceable sentiment (10-20 items per category, not 100).
  • Photographs (digitize the rest; one box of physical photos max).
  • Tools, kitchenware, linens you'll actually use in the new place.

What to let go of, even when it hurts

  • Adult children's school papers and toys. Give them the choice to take it; they almost always say no, and that's okay.
  • Books you've read and won't reread.
  • Clothes more than two sizes off.
  • Duplicate or excess furniture.
  • "Just in case" items that have been "just in case" for 10+ years.

Handling family heirlooms

Offer them to family first. Photograph them with provenance notes before letting go. If no one in the family wants them, that's information — they don't belong to anyone anymore. Donate to historical societies or museums when appropriate.

Selling vs donating

Estate sales make sense for whole-house downsizing; estate sale companies take 30-40%. For individual valuable items, eBay or local Facebook groups. For everything else, donate — the time-cost of selling small items rarely pays off.

Local help

Senior Move Managers (search NASMM directory) coordinate the whole process for $50-100/hour. Worth it for many families. Check the community needs board for posts about local moving help.
